Photographer 5 - Craig McDean

Photographer 5 - Craig McDean:

Craig McDean is a British fashion photographer originally from Manchester and now based in New York. McDean started off as a car mechanic before studying photography. His work is commonly used for advertising purposes, and he has photographed for brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein and Estee Lauder.

I have decided to include the work of Craig McDean in my research as i think that he is a good example of advertising photography. His images usually advertise a product with it being worn or used by a model, these models are often famous celebrities, some of whom McDean has worked with include Cara Delevingne, Madonna and Natalie Portman. I find that his style of photographing is interesting, something common in most of his photographs is the use of colour. In many of his images he uses the same sort of tones and shades of one or two colours. This creates a interesting image that all fits together subtly.

This is and example of an advert for makeup brand Yves Saint Laurent, the model Cara Delevingne is featured in this image promoting a new makeup product. The way that this has advertised the product is by having Cara wear it, commonly brands think that if its worn by a well known celebrity then many people would be interested in buying it. In this image the use of colour like oranges and browns has made the image quite a subtle colour that still  stands out. The use of light on the left side of them has been used to try and highlight Cara's face, by doing so they would be highlighting the product that she's wearing helping it to stand out and to promote it further.

This image is another example of beauty advertisement this time for the bran Estee Lauder. In this image they are not promoting one singular product, but just the brand in itself. The aim for this image was to just show a makeup look and photograph it in a way that makes the products look interesting and sellable. This way of advertising is incising without giving to much away. This would meant that anyone who was interested in the products would have to go to the store to find out more. The image itself is interesting in ways of the composition. The side on view of the model where they have turned their head towards the camera means that the face ties up the majority of the frame. By doing so the makeup look becomes the main focus of the image.

This image an example of a fashion advert. In this image colour has been considerate so that the image doesn't have a large amount of contrasts. In this image different tones of grey have been used to allow for the image to fit together elegantly. The composition of the image has been considered in a way that shows the outfit in a clear way, and make it fit into the advert effectively.

This image could debatably be advertising both makeup and fashion. The composition of the image makes it possible that both is being shown as you get clear view of both the clothing as well as her face and the makeup that she's wearing. By doing this the photographer has been able to show the whole appearance of the model, this could become inspiration for people looking to buy the products being sold.
In summary, McDeans work has been an influence to me as he has helped me to look into the idea of advertising photography. His work has made me be considerate of my composition and colour that I'm using. Overall i think that McDean has been a good photographer for me to research and think that his style of photography could form a shoot at some point in my project.

Photographer 4 -Yulia Gorbachenko

Photographer 4 -Yulia Gorbachenko:

Yulia is a New York Based fashion and beauty photographer, she holds a Masters degree in Digital Photography from the school of visual arts in New York. She's photographed for averts for brands such as L'Oreal, Make Up For Ever, and Clinique. Her images have been shown in Elle magazine and Cosmopolitan UK.

I have chosen to include Gorbanchenko's work in my project as i think that she evidences a very modern approach to beauty and fashion photography. Her work for magazines shows many trends that are being followed or will be followed in the future. Her style of photography is simple yet elegant with the majority of her images focusing massively on composition.

Gorbanchenko's work is an influence to me as she is able to achieve simple shots that look effortless and professional. Her style of photography is something that I  would aim to incorporate in to my project a i think that it could be very effective and interesting for my project. I could also use this technique for my project photography and aim to shoot the images as if they were going to be used in a magazine.

The images both above and below are examples of the work that Gorbanchenko has used in magazines. The image above is an example of how she decided to photography fashion, this way of photographing has meant that she could show both sides of the jumper that is being advertised. They way that these images have been lit is so that there is a slight shadow in the bottom corner, this adds depth to the image making the lighting of the image more interesting. The use of the lighting here has also allowed for the hair to stand out and contrast against the colours of the jumper and the skin.

The image above is another example of her images for magazine work. This image however is more focused on the beauty side of photograph, this close up shot of the face allows for a clear view of the makeup on the face. The way that the camera has been set up has been made to try and keep a minimalistic and natural look on the face. This has been achieved and the model hardly looks as if they are wearing any makeup. This image would have been used for a natural beauty shoot to try and show minimalistic makeup.

These images above and below are both from Gorbanchenko's personal portfolio on her website. The image above is again a image that focuses on the makeup side of beauty. The models hair is also a key part of the image as it takes up a large amount of the frame and is a prominent feature of the model. The styling of the hair makes the image stand out as it looks in place as well as natural at the same time. The way that this image has been lit is with more light on one side of the face and less on the other, this creates subtle shadows on the face making it look more natural and adding depth to the features.

This image below is an example of Gorbanchenko's more abstract work. Here tone has been used to enhance many shadows on the face. The use of the lighting highlights the areas of the face that the sun would naturally hit making it stand out but in a natural way.

In summary the work of Gorbachenko will be a strong influence for me as she has a classy and elegant way of photographing makeup and fashion photographs. I like her subtle use of shadows as i think that they add a nice amount of depth to the image as well as keeping the natural aspect to the image. I think the way they she will influence me the most will be through her lighting use as i think that it is key to making this style of images look effective.

Photographer 3 - David Bailey

Photographer 3 - David Bailey:

David Bailey is considered one of the pioneers of contemporary photography. He was born in Leytonstone, East London and has remained living in London for the majority of his life. He became a photographer assistant in 1959 at the John French Studio. In 1960 his was contracted as a fashion photographer for the magazine Vogue.

I have chosen to include David Bailey because of his iconic fashion photographs. With Bailey being so well known for his photography in fashion, i felt it hard to not include him. A lot of his work also incorporates portraiture which is an aspect that i can take influence from when looking at beauty. I find his use of tone makes his images look flawless and perfect with them having the perfect lighting needed.

Bailey is an influence of mine to help me to consider the set up of my photographs. I have found that by looking at his images i am going to take tone into consideration as well as use lighting massively to impact my images. His work has also allowed me to think more throughly about my composition and how i actually want my final image to look.

Above and below are examples of David Baileys work. The image above is his work with model Kate Moss. Both of these images are examples of Bailey's style of shooting where the model takes up he majority of the frame and high key lighting has been used. Definition is clear in both of these images, in the first image it is clear when looking at her face as you can see a very defined jaw bone. The second image shows well structured facial features that have been well enhanced to suit the image. The hair in both these images suits the frame well and has been altered to fit with the composition of the images.

These images are another example of Bailey's work again the use of high key and tone show the typical style that Bailey chooses to shoot in. In these images the composition has been altered as the main aspect of the image is the hair. In both of these images the use of tone helps to see the different shades in the models hair. This is an example of beauty photography as it shows the makeup and hair effectively and enhances them to give a flawless look.

In summary, David Bailey is a influence to me as he is able reflect on beauty through his portraiture work. Also his use of tone and high key helps to give these images a well defined enhanced look. This is one way that i could look at beauty on people as it would work well to look at peoples own personal style of makeup and how they choose to wear their makeup.

Photographer 2 - Iain Crawford

Photographer 2 - Iain Crawford:

Iain Crawford grew up in Africa and Malaysia and found a passion for photography at a young age. He lived and worked in New York  before moving back to London where he is now based. The main aim of his photography is to capture images that have strong graphical and textural aspects, yet he makes sure he keeps the emotional and personal aspects to each of his photographs.

I have picked this photographer because of his take on beauty photography. He breaks up natural photography by adding small original aspects of face paints to make the image his own. Yet he is still able to keep the natural aspect prominent. I have also chosen him because of the fact that he doesn't just stick to natural photography and also creates a aspect of abstract beauty. Here he use bright colours as well as original ways of saying the makeup and styling the photograph.

Iain Crawford is a influence to me because of his way of incorporating natural and abstract beauty photography. I have found while looking at his work, that empty backgrounds are key and help to make the focus on the model. I also like the way that he is able to show personality and emotion with his images, which is something that i would like to achieve with my photography.

The images above and below are an example of how Crawford uses a small amount of face paint to away from the idea of completely natural but not completely abstract. I think that this idea is eye-catching as it changes the concept of natural photography. The whole set up of the images are left basic as well as the makeup that is worn.  This idea is something that i hadn't of thought of and have only considered since studying this photographer.

The image above is a example of natural photography. The background of the image is plain so that the only thing for you to look at. This makes the image more personal without there being any distractions. You look at the makeup in a different way because of the side view meaning you can't look at the whole face. The hair in this image is also left quiet natural and not over done making the whole image be relaxed.

This is an example of his more abstract work. The whole look is a lot more dramatic and dark making it feel at lot more tense. This is done through the clothing in the image with it all being black and flowing. the clothing takes up the majority of the frame, but the face can still be seen. The makeup on the face appears to be quite dark and dramatic shown through the shadows of the choice of lighting.

Photographer 1 - Jamie Nelson

Photographer 1 - Jamie Nelson:

Jamie Nelson was born in a small town in Texas and raised in Colorado. At the age of 17 she discovered her passion for photography and moved to California to attend the Brooks institute of photography. Once she finished college she moved to New York to become a fashion and beauty photographer.  Her work has been featured in many different magazines such as Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Vanity fair and she has photographed advertisements for companies like Maybelline, Benefit and Urban Decay.

I have chosen her work because of the way that she chooses to style her photos. I find her commercial and abstract photography to be interesting  and eye catching. i have found that by looking at this photographer i have found myself getting so much more intrigued with my project and inspired with my project.

She is an influence to me as i am going to use makeup as  a big part of my project. By looking at her photos i have got many different ideas to move my project along and to help it develop. I think that her photography will play a big influence to my project as the way she has photographed different aspects of makeup and full face makeup is something that i would like to achieve.

These two images above and below the idea of the photograph is to show the colour of the lips. in the image above the photograph is used to advertise the product by Maybelline. The image below is more just focused on the lip its self. Both of these are a gold way at showing style of lip colour because it is something that people ca change and adapt so easily to change their look slightly. People choose their lip colour via personal preference and it an give people more personality and confidence.

In this image the whole face of makeup can be seen, the focus is on the eyes. The rest of the face has been left natural but is still prominent for the photo. The eyes in the photograph are eye-catching and standout but do not completely contrast with the rest of the face. This is another example of how people can make certain parts of their face standout more than others to make them follow a certain trend or to look a certain way.

This photo is an example of Nelsons more abstract work. In the image they have used more heavy and dramatic makeup and hair. This evidences how how makeup can be used differently. This idea of makeup makes stage makeup and drag makeup come to mind because of how heaving it is. Abstract makeup is another angle to take my project if i wanted to.

Research log

Research Log:

1-Claire Harrison:

Above is a photograph by beauty, fashion and hair photographer Claire Harrison. Her photographs range from looking at strong bright uses of makeup to a more natural look. Her photographs all have a strong use of lighting to highlight key parts of the photograph. None of her photographs are over exposed but well enough lit to focus on the appropriate section of the photo. Her photography has become an influence of mine as it is it's a very accurate example of the direction that I am looking to take my project down. I am looking to experiment with glam and simple makeup as well as looking at hair. I also like the way that her photographs have been shot with simplicity and well lit to show the emphasis of the makeup.

2-Jamie Nelson:

The image above is an example of Jamie Nelson's photography. He is well known for his focus on beauty and fashion. The image above comes from a shoot he did for the makeup brand Maybelline where he was advertising there products. His work is a good influence to me as it shows me makeup photography in the commercial world, and how it is advertised. It gives me inspiration to look at his work in a way of being more abstract.

3-David Adams:

This is an example of Michael David Adams' photography. His is a New York fashion and beauty photographer whose photographs have been featured on many different fashion and lifestyle magazines. His work shows fashion and makeup in a glamorous way that makes it desirable for others. By looking at his work, the concept of magazine fashion comes to mind which is something i could attempt for my project, and take style down the route of advertising.

4-Richard Miles

The image above is an example Richard Miles' photography. In this photograph he is example get both makeup and fashion. The use of tone in his photography makes the image more dramatic and more emotional. In this photograph the makeup hair and clothing has been kept simple but still appropriate for the photograph. The whole piece fits together with the lighting being appropriate and making the photograph look incising.

5-David Bailey

David Bailey is a well known fashion photographer. Much of his work has featured in magazines such as vogue. He is also well known for his portrait photography that could be used in my project. The majority of his work is in black and white, which makes the photograph hold more emotion and more simple. His work is a simple but effective way that i can shoot style and makeup as it would be a simple shoot but an effective way of showing different styles.

6-Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer. Her work has featured in vogue many times and is well know for her abstract mythical ideas. While her work is not directly showing makeup, what is interesting her is the style of photography where she has incorporated mythical aspect to make he photography more interesting. This is something that i could consider to give my work a more abstract feel.

7-Steve Kraitt

This is an example of beauty photographer Steve Kraitt, he is based in London and focuses a lot of his career on advertising. His beauty work has stood out to me because of his use of colour. His models wear colours that people don't usually where as day to day makeup, this is a interesting concept as it takes the use of makeup away from the safety of the everyday norms.

8-Iain Crawford

This is an example of Iain Crawford's work. His photographs are commonly beauty based and can be natural and abstract. I like his style of natural photography as shown in the image above. In the image he has taken a close up portrait which is well lit so that it compliments the face. I like how the makeup hasn't been over done and left simple to show a different direction of makeup.

9-Raymond Meier

This is a photograph by Raymond Meier, its been shot in the style of an 80's makeup style. This concept is a modern photograph that has been styled in the pass. This has been an influence to me as i can look and makeup looks of the past, and has given me the idea to look at the history of makeup looks and how they have changed over time.

10-Richard Avedon

This is an example of Richard Avedon's work, an American fashion and portrait photographer. He died in 2004 and was a photographer for his whole life. His work is a more dated style and predominately involves black and white photography. In the image above fashion is the main concept of the photograph, and here the use of tone is a key feature making the image look more intense and dramatic. The use of fashion and jewellery is simple here with it not being bold but not being ignored, this shows the aim of the fashion photographer without it being forced into the audiences face.

11-Yulia Gorbachenko

This is an example of Yulia Gorbachenko's photography, she has a masters degree in digital photography and is a beauty photographer based in New York. She has photographed for many different magazines and has been able to show many different styles and looks. Her photography can be quite naturally based where she uses appropriate lighting without over or under exposing her model. Some of her photography can be more abstract but she remains constant with her use of lighting and not over exposing her images.

12-Amber Grey

Amber Gray is a fashion beauty and conceptual photographer. In her work she makes the fashion that is the focus be in co-ordination with the background. This how idea makes the whole image work together and make sure that the main subject doesn't look as if they have been placed on a random background that doesn't fit the concept.  I think that this is an important aspect of fashion photography to make the whole image come together to fit the style of photography.

13-Jamie Nader

James Nader is a British fashion and beauty photographer. He says that his understanding of concepts and designs and his edgy interpretations enables him to create pieces of style that can influence or advertise fashion. I have chosen his work through the way that he styles his photographs. The image above is an example of this where he has chosen a background and setting that fits in perfectly with the clothing and style of the model.

14-Ellen Von Unwerth

Ellen Von Unwerth began her career as a model for 10 years before she decided to more behind the camera. Her work has featured on the cover of vogue, vanity fair and many other famous magazines. She has published many books on photography and also directed many music videos for starts like Christian Aguilera and Beyonce. Her photography work demonstrates fashion and beauty in a natural and subtle way, without it being to 'in your face' this makes it more original and effective as to becomes more powerful and more interesting to look at.

15-Craig Mcdean

This is an example of Craig Mcdean's photography work. He is a British photographer who worked as a car mechanic before choosing to study photography. He is now based in New York where he has photographed for brands suchs as Yves Sain Laurent, Calvin Klein and Estee Lauder. His work is an example of how fashion and beauty can be advertised and how well known brands use it to sell their products.

16-Steven Klein

Steven Klein is another example of advertising fashion and beauty. He is based in New York and is known for photographing for brands such as Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton Alexander McQueen and Nike. His work is eye-catching and standouts, making it rememberable which is the aim of advertising photography.

17-Bruce Webber

Bruce Webber is another advertising photographer. His work is well known for brands such as Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. In the example i have chosen he has decided to photograph in black and white which changes the theme of the image. The whole concept looks more sublet and natural, it makes you have to look for the aspect that is being advertised as it has been made to look natural in the setting through the use of tone and clothing.

18-Terry Richards

Terry Richards is a well know celebrity photographer, he has worked with people such Kylie Jenner, Cara Delevingne and Beyonce. He is an example of fashion photography when working with these celebrities and commonly uses a play white background to focus solely on the person in the shot. This is effective as you have got only the person and their clothes to like at, making him effective at showing beauty and fashion.

18-Carlton Davis

Above is an example of Carlton Davis' product photography. Here he is photographing different colours of lipsticks as advertisement for Dior. This idea is another part of style that i could look at i can look at different styles of products such as packaging as well as look at the different colour both on the face and not.

20-Rich Begany

Rich Begany's work is another example of product photography. Here is is showing the product in different way without showing the packaging or brand. This is a way of showing products without being brand specific, which is another way that i could show product photography in my project.
